Celebrating 80 Years of VfL Wolfsburg: A Journey from Humble Beginnings to Sports City Icon
VfL Wolfsburg, a staple of the German sports landscape, recently marked its 80th anniversary with a grand reception at Schloss Wolfsburg. This milestone was commemorated on September 16, 2025, exactly 80 years after the club was founded on September 12, 1945.
The club's inception was a modest affair, involving just twelve individuals—eleven men and one woman—with no significant financial investment or major corporate sponsorship. Instead, VfL Wolfsburg was established as a folk sports and cultural club, initially in a barracks on Reislinger Straße, in a city with around 15,000 inhabitants.
The sporting successes that the club has since achieved have become closely intertwined with the city's history. The athletes of VfL Wolfsburg are not just players; they are outstanding ambassadors for the city, their expressions of pride evident during the German championship celebration in May 2009.
The founding anniversary celebrations included various events, culminating in the Schloss reception. Prominent figures and companions attended the event, with representatives from the club, city, Volkswagen, fan base, and other partners in attendance.
Mayor Dennis Weilmann, in his speech, recalled personal experiences, such as the German championship celebration on the town hall square, emphasising the club's significance as a image bearer for the sports city of Wolfsburg for 80 years.
