Bremen Philharmonic Kicks Off 200th Concert Season with Beethoven's "King Stephen Overture"

The Bremen Philharmonic is set to inaugurate its 200th concert season with a grand performance of Ludwig van Beethoven's "King Stephen Overture" on Sunday, September 22, 2024, at 11:00 AM and Monday, September 23, 2024, at 7:30 PM. The concerts will take place at the Glocke Concert Hall, located at Domsheide 4/5, 28195 Bremen.

Beethoven's "King Stephen Overture" is a patriotic work composed in 1811 to honour King Stephen I and celebrate Hungarian nationalism. The overture showcases Beethoven's occasional contributions to ceremonial music, embodying heroic, pathetic, and majestic sounds.

The concert will feature soprano Sarah-Jane Brandon as a guest performer. Brandon, who has previously played Lady Macbeth and Ariadne at the Theater Bremen, will undoubtedly add a captivating element to the performance.

Following Beethoven's overture, Richard Strauss' "Four Last Songs" will be performed. This collection of songs, characterised by a melancholic mood and themes of change, transitions, and transience, will provide a poignant contrast to the festive atmosphere of Beethoven's work.

The concert season continues with performances of Strauss' "Four Last Songs" on Spring, September, Going to Sleep, and At Sunset. Additionally, Anton Bruckner's Symphony No. 9 in D minor will be performed, with sections Feierlich, misterioso, Scherzo. Bewegt, lebhaft - Trio. Schnell, Adagio. Langsam, feierlich.

Bruckner's ninth symphony, dedicated to "the majesty of all majesties, the beloved God", is a significant addition to the concert programme. Although Bruckner died before completing his ninth symphony, the performance will include the symphony up to the penultimate movement. The premiere of Bruckner's ninth symphony took place on February 11, 1903, in Vienna.

Tickets for the concerts range from 19 to 56 euros, with reduced prices at 9.50 and 45 euros. Tickets can be purchased online at www.bremerphilharmoniker.de, www.glocke.de, www.nordwest-ticket.de, and www.eventim.de, as well as at their box offices and at the box office.

This concert promises to be a memorable event, not to be missed by classical music enthusiasts.
