Celebrating National Comic Book Day: Iconic Comic Book Heroes of America
In a recent nationwide survey conducted in September 2023, the preferences of American comic book fans were revealed. The comprehensive study, which polled a representative sample of 2,000 U.S. residents, sheds light on the most beloved characters and villains in the comic book world.
The results show a clear favourite in the hero category: Batman, the caped crusader from DC Comics, is the most popular comic book character in 34 states, with a total of 23.1% of respondents expressing their admiration.
Coming in a close second is Spider-Man, the friendly neighbourhood superhero from Marvel Comics. With 15.8% of states choosing him, Spider-Man is not only the favourite Marvel character but also the second favourite hero overall.
The survey also unveiled the nation's favourite villains. The Joker, the chaotic and menacing arch-nemesis of Batman, emerged as the favourite villain, earning the approval of 28.7% of respondents. In second place, Catwoman, the villainess and occasional ally of Batman, received 11.3% of the votes. Magneto, the mutant master of magnetism, and Loki, the god of mischief, rounded off the top five list of villains with 7.9% and 8.3% of the votes, respectively.
Interestingly, the survey also revealed the preferences of Americans when it comes to Marvel vs. DC. A resounding 66.8% of respondents voted for Team Marvel, while only 33.2% opted for Team DC.
The average age of respondents was 37.4 years old, with a slight male majority (52.2%) and a nearly equal female population (45.4%). The survey also included respondents identifying as non-binary (2.1%), transgender (0.2%), and other (0.2%).
While this survey does not provide a definitive ranked list of all comic book characters, it offers a fascinating glimpse into the preferences of American comic book fans. Other popular characters, such as Deadpool, Captain America, Wonder Woman, Wolverine, Daredevil, Green Arrow, and Invincible, continue to maintain a strong fanbase and appear in significant crossover stories.
