Celebrating Benno Pludra at 100: Five Special Books Mark GDR Author's Centennial
Celebrating the centennial of Benno Pludra, a renowned GDR children's and young adult author, five special books are being presented. Born in Lusatia on October 1, 1925, Pludra's works often explored conflicts between youth and adults, with maritime settings featuring prominently in his stories.
One of Pludra's most celebrated novels, 'The Journey to Sundevit', is a classic set between the Bodden and the open sea. The story was later adapted into a film by the GDR television and DEFA in 1983, with 'Island of Swans' also being adapted by DEFA in the same year, directed by Herrmann Zschoche. Pludra's fascination with maritime worlds is evident in many of his stories.
'The Journey to Sundevit' and 'Island of Swans' are notable for their exploration of open and hidden conflicts between young people and adults. In 'Island of Swans', Pludra critically examines environmental and urban planning deficits in the GDR, leaving it to his audience to ponder the many contradictions in his stories.
Benno Pludra, who passed away in 2014, left a lasting impact on GDR literature. His works continue to be celebrated and studied, with special editions of five of his books marking his 100th birthday. Through his stories, Pludra encouraged young readers to think critically about the world around them.
