Rainer Holbe, a prominent figure in German television, has passed away at the age of 85 in Frankfurt am Main, according to consistent media reports. Holbe's career in television spanned transformative decades, from public broadcasting's golden age to the rise of private commercial television, making him a key figure in shaping programming and formats in that era.
Holbe achieved his big breakthrough with the ZDF music show Starparade, which aired from 1968 to 1980. The show was one of the biggest audience hits of the time and featured major international stars such as Barry Manilow, ABBA, Neil Diamond, T. Rex, and Frank Sinatra. Bandleader James Last made his first television appearance on this show and accompanied almost all guests until the show ended.
In the 1980s, Holbe became one of the pioneers of German private television by helping establish RTL (then RTLplus). He was instrumental in launching Germany's first-ever breakfast television format on RTL in 1987, narrowly beating rival Sat.1 to the air. He was also recognized as a prominent face and ambassador of RTL during this period.
Holbe further distinguished himself by hosting RTL’s talk show Die Woche, which won the prestigious Grimme-Preis, a respected German television award. He also reported live from Berlin immediately following the fall of the Berlin Wall on November 9, 1989, marking a significant key moment in German television history.
In addition to mainstream programming, Holbe developed a niche for exploring paranormal phenomena scientifically in television series like Unglaubliche Geschichten (RTL) and Phantastische Phänomene (Sat.1), covering topics from Marian apparitions to UFOs. As an author, he promoted new ways of relating to nature and animal life through his books, such as Mitgeschöpfe – Die geheimen Kräfte der Tiere und Pflanzen.
Holbe's death occurred peacefully in the circle of his family. His daughter confirmed the news.
