Cebu’s Traslacion dry run exposes security gaps ahead of January procession

Authorities in Cebu have completed a dry run for the upcoming Traslacion event, identifying key security and logistical challenges. The Mandaue City Police Office (MCPO) led the operation, working alongside multiple agencies to prepare for the two-day procession on January 15-16. Over 1,000 personnel will be deployed to ensure safety during the event.

The dry run revealed issues such as garbage and illegally parked vehicles blocking the motorcade route. Despite these obstacles, MCPO Director Col. Cirilo Acosta gave the exercise a positive assessment. The convoy’s estimated travel time ranges from 15 to 20 minutes, depending on crowd size.

Security planning involved coordination with numerous groups, including the Cebu City Police Office, Lapu-Lapu City Police Office, and the Highway Patrol Group. The Philippine Coast Guard, Armed Forces of the Philippines (Central Command), and local disaster response teams also contributed. Another dry run is set for January 9 to refine protocols for the Lapu-Lapu City segment. Personnel will remain on duty until the procession’s send-off is complete, with round-the-clock police presence at the church. The public has been urged to respect the convoy’s path and avoid disruptions during the event.

The Traslacion will span two days, with overnight stops in Mandaue City and Lapu-Lapu City. Security measures will stay in place until the procession concludes. Authorities continue to adjust plans to address logistical concerns before the event begins.
