Cebu Delegation Strengthens Ties at China-Asean Expo

Vice Governor Glenn Soco of Cebu, Philippines, is leading a delegation at the 22nd China-Asean Expo in Nanning City, China. The delegation, which includes Provincial Board Members Malcolm Sanchez and Dason Lorenz Lagon, is actively courting investors and expanding market linkages.

Cebu is deepening its connections with its sister provinces in China: Guangxi, Guangdong, Sichuan, and Hainan. This move is part of Cebu's strategy to position itself as a premier hub for tourism and investments in Southeast Asia.

Vice Governor Soco emphasizes the importance of stronger connectivity, including direct flights to Asean cities, to facilitate trade and investment. He views Cebu's participation in the expo as an opportunity to showcase the region to the world and to strengthen partnerships.

The purpose of the Cebu delegation's participation is multifaceted. It is not just diplomacy, but about building bridges that bring tangible benefits to its communities. Cebu's involvement in the expo reinforces its bid to attract foreign capital and position itself as the country's leading investment destination outside Metro Manila.

During the expo, Cebu's officials attended high-level meetings with Guangxi Governor Wei Tao and Asean leaders, discussing trade, culture, and development cooperation. At the Guangxi International Sister Cities Promotion Conference, Cebu highlighted its competitive strengths and pitched collaboration with Chinese and Asean businesses.

The sectors of interest for Cebu include digital innovation, artificial intelligence, and cross-border partnerships. These areas are seen as opportunities to diversify the economy and solidify Cebu's position as a key investment and tourism hub in Southeast Asia.

By joining hundreds of international dignitaries, including China Vice President Han Zheng and senior Asean officials, Cebu signals its intent to play a more active role in shaping regional growth. The Expo, which runs from Sept. 17 to 19, focuses on these very areas, making it an ideal platform for Cebu to showcase its potential and forge new partnerships.
