A Temporary Truce: Putin and Trump Agree on Energy Infrastructure Ceasefire in Ukraine

- Ceasefire on power plants agreed by Putin

In a surprising turn of events, Russian President Vladimir Putin has agreed, in a call with US President Donald Trump, to a 30-day suspension of attacks on Ukraine's energy facilities under the condition that Kyiv mirrors this move. The decision followed a discussion between the two leaders, during which they also set their sights on arranging talks on a more extensive Black Sea ceasefire, eventually leading to a complete cessation of hostilities.

However, the two leaders could not reach an accord on a general truce in the Ukraine conflict. Negotiations on this matter are to commence without delay in the Middle East, as per the White House.

Trump has been urging for an end to Russia's invasion of Ukraine, and not long ago, high-ranking officials from the Trump administration met with representatives from Kyiv in Saudi Arabia. Ukraine has agreed to a preliminary 30-day truce in the conflict provided that Moscow also abides by this arrangement. Previously, Putin had stated that Russia would be open to ending hostilities, subject to specific prerequisites.

Just prior to the conversation, Trump sent his special envoy, Steve Witkoff, to Moscow, where he spent hours conversing with Putin, discussing the proposed truce. Witkoff, however, declined to comment on Putin's demands, which are alleged to encompass the surrender of Ukrainian forces in the Russian region of Kursk, international recognition of the territories annexed by Russia, a ban on foreign peacekeeping troops in Ukraine, and a halt to Western military aid.

Ukraine finds itself on the defensive as Putin initiated the war in neighboring Ukraine more than three years ago to reclaim its influence. Ukraine relies on Western support, but has been pushed back on several fronts recently. The demand for a widespread truce was dismissed by Putin with his usual arguments: it is uncertain how such a truce can be monitored and safeguarded, and the West must cease providing weapons and intelligence to Kyiv. Furthermore, the Kremlin pressed for secure shipping in the Black Sea.

This is the second conversation between Trump and Putin since Trump returned to the White House on January 20. Their previous conversation took place on February 12. Trump has resumed close communication with Russia since coming into office, following a period of relative silence between Washington and Moscow during Joe Biden's tenure.
