Ceasefire between Thailand and Cambodia praised by Australian Embassy in statement
In a significant move towards de-escalating tensions, the Thai and Cambodian governments have agreed to an immediate and unconditional ceasefire along their border, following intense fighting throughout late July. Despite the ceasefire, tensions remain elevated as of early August, with unresolved issues like the capture of 20 Cambodian soldiers.
The agreement was made during a General Border Committee (GBC) meeting in Kuala Lumpur on August 7, 2025. Australia has publicly welcomed this commitment, urging both Thailand and Cambodia to respect it, exercise restraint, and resolve disputes peacefully.
During the meeting, ASEAN's leadership, particularly Malaysia's role as the ASEAN chair, was praised for facilitating the ceasefire and establishing an ASEAN-led monitoring mechanism. This mechanism is intended to oversee the ceasefire's implementation effectively and fully.
Cambodia and Thailand's senior defense officials also met in Kuala Lumpur starting August 7 to finalize a permanent end to hostilities. They agreed to allow observers from the ASEAN regional bloc to inspect disputed border areas, restore trust between their militaries, and agree on guidelines to manage border disputes and protect civilians. Observers from ASEAN, alongside China and the United States, are expected to play a critical role in monitoring compliance and easing tensions.
The ceasefire is supported by Australia, which has expressed its support for a peaceful and stable region. The meeting's aim extends beyond de-escalation, as it also aims to support a prosperous region. The ongoing diplomatic and military meetings are aimed at achieving a lasting peace and border stability.
