CDU's Economic Faction Rejects Backing for Spahn's Economy Agenda

In an unexpected turn of events, the Mittelstand und Wirtschaftsunion (MIT), a powerful economic wing of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), has withdrawn its support for Health Minister Jens Spahn's candidacy for the position of deputy CDU chairman.

The decision was made during an extraordinary session of the MIT held on Tuesday. The meeting, held via video conference due to current circumstances, was marked by great displeasure with Minister Spahn.

The MIT had been instrumental in Spahn's rise in the CDU for years, having nominated him for party leadership positions in the past. However, this time around, the economic wing has withheld its support for Spahn, citing proportionality reasons that would not allow for his inclusion in the narrower party leadership.

The MIT supports the candidacy of Friedrich Merz for the party chairmanship. If Merz is elected, he could propose Armin Laschet, who currently holds the post of deputy party chairman, as his deputy. Laschet, like Spahn, hails from North Rhine-Westphalia.

Interestingly, Spahn had thrown his support behind Laschet's candidacy for the party chairmanship without consulting the economic wing. This move may have contributed to the current situation.

The MIT chairman, Carsten Linnemann, withdrew his proposal to support Spahn's nomination for the deputy party chairmanship. Spahn was also nominated for this position by his home state of North Rhine-Westphalia.

When reached for comment, Linnemann declined to discuss events from internal meetings. Jens Spahn was not available for inquiries, according to the "Welt" newspaper.

It remains to be seen how these developments will affect the internal dynamics of the CDU and the upcoming leadership elections. The withdrawal of support from the MIT is a significant blow to Spahn's bid for the deputy party chairmanship.
