Karsten Wildberger: The New Digital Minister Finds His Political Roots in CDU

CDU Party welcomes new Digital Minister to its ranks.

Having been seemingly born and raised in politics, Karsten Wildberger officially becomes a member of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) in North Rhine-Westphalia. The CEO of the Ceconomy group and former politically unaffiliated individual now joins the party led by Hendrik Wüst, the state premier and CDU leader of North Rhine-Westphalia.

Wildberger's political debut comes as he takes on the role of federal digital minister under Chancellor Friedrich Merz. In his announcement, Wildberger expressed that North Rhine-Westphalia has long been his home, and the CDU has been his political home for a considerable time, despite not being a formal member until now.

The CDU, known for its support of a robust social market economy and commitment to changing long-overdue policies, particularly in digitalization and state modernization, stands behind Wildberger. The party's vision encompasses bolstering the trust of citizens in government and state institutions.

Chief Secretary of the CDU NRW, Paul Ziemiak, welcomed Wildberger's decision to join the CDU North Rhine-Westphalia. The 55-year-old Wildberger, a surprise appointment by Chancellor Merz, is synonymous with tech-savvy and innovative advancements, making him the perfect addition to advance the Union on the Rhine and Ruhr in line with the motto "From coal to AI."

As the new digital minister, Wildberger's primary focus will likely lie in policies that align with the Merz cabinet's digitalization agenda and the broader CDU/CSU-SPD coalition. With his recent CDU membership, Wildberger's regional plans may revolve around enhancing infrastructure, promoting digital literacy, and fostering innovation in North Rhine-Westphalia to create a more technologically advanced state. However, the specifics of these plans remain to be seen as the national digital strategies are implemented locally.
