CDU Leader Accuses SPD Secretary Raab of Deception in Rhineland-Palatinate
In a heated special session of the Rhineland-Palatinate state parliament, CDU parliamentary group leader Gordon Schnieder accused State Secretary Heike Raab (SPD) of attempting to deceive the parliament, press, and broadcasting committees. Schnieder didn't mince words, labeling its occurrence as unacceptable and a substantial part of a larger "intimidation plan."
Raab's criticism of a SWR TV report was marked as the catalyst for these accusations. In a letter to SWR state broadcasting director Ulla Fiebig, Raab expressed disappointment over the report's focus on SPD politician Roger Lewentz, who had stepped down as Rhineland-Palatinate Interior Minister post-Ahr Valley flood disaster.
The opposition, comprising both CDU and Free Voters factions, viewed this letter as an inappropriate attempt to sway coverage towards a party colleague and a dangerous threat towards the broadcaster, amplified by the letterhead's use of the state government.
Despite this, Raab eventually admitted her errors last week and resigned from her positions on the SWR committees. However, her attempts to mislead the media committee and her unsuccessful refutation of the personal allegations against her remained a sticking point.
Urging for Action
Fed up with such manipulation, CDU leader Schnieder urged Minister President Malu Dreyer (SPD) to remove Raab from her post as the state’s liaison to the federal government, Europe, and media. Schnieder saw the Raab case as emblematic of power at any cost, showcasing red felt and political favoritism.
