CDU MP Tilman Kuban Proposes Shift in Germany's Climate Strategy

CDU MP Tilman Kuban has sparked debate by proposing a shift in Germany's climate protection strategy. Instead of setting new numeric targets, he suggests focusing on practical reforms like tax policy and reducing regulations. Kuban warns that the EU's 2050 climate goal is at risk without immediate action.

Kuban argues for adjusting Germany and the EU's climate goals to 80% climate neutrality by 2045, prioritising prosperity and democracy. He believes this will help maintain competitiveness and prevent 'empty factories'.

However, Andreas Jung, deputy parliamentary group leader of the Union, rejects Kuban's proposal. Jung emphasises the commitment to climate neutrality by 2045 and the need for planning and investment security. He argues that stable framework conditions are crucial to achieve the existing climate goals, such as the Climate Protection Act's 2030 target of 65% emission reduction compared to 1990.

The debate highlights differing views within the CDU on how to tackle climate protection. While Kuban advocates for a focus on practical reforms, Jung emphasises the importance of maintaining the existing climate goals and providing stable conditions for investment. The discussion underscores the complexity of balancing climate protection with economic prosperity.
