The head honcho of the Left faction in Germany's federal parliament, Heidi Reichinnek, hasn't shut the door on potential collaboration with a CDU state government in Saxony-Anhalt after the 2026 election. In an interview with the German Press Agency, Reichinnek expressed, "I'm prepared to ponder many things before my homestead is surrendered to the wolves of the AfD." Originally hailing from Saalekreis, Reichinnek represents the Left faction in Berlin.

At present, Saxony-Anhalt is governed by a coalition of CDU, SPD, and FDP. Fresh elections for the state legislature are scheduled for September 2026. The AfD remains the largest opposition faction, aspiring to take control of the state the following year.

Reichinnek insists the CDU should revoke their resolution against the Left, stating, "Of course, the CDU could and should affirm that they'll work with a democratic party like the Left, but not with the far-right AfD. It only necessitates a fundamental democratic compass." She underscored, "Ultimately, the Union will need to decide where it wishes to stand on history's side."

The deputy leader of the Union faction, Sepp Müller, countered, asserting that the Left is essentially the successor party to the SED. "It continues to advocate for socialism in its party manifesto. It can't be a partner for us, either in federal or state government," Müller noted to the German Press Agency.

The chairman of the AfD in Saxony-Anhalt, Martin Reichardt, maintained that the populace in this region has been casting predominantly national-conservative ballots for years. According to Reichardt, the CDU is disregarding this fact. "The Christian Democrats must mull over whether, for how long, and with whom they wish to persist in this erroneous game," Reichardt declared.
