CDU Pushes for Extra Billion Euros in Aid for Lower Saxony Municipalities

Previously, the state's boss man, Olaf Lies (SPD), unveiled a grand agreement between the states and the federal government, vowing to cover the losses of revenue for the municipalities while sharing the burden with the states at a whopping eight billion euros.
But Lechner reckons Lower Saxony should pick up the slack, too. "The federal government has jumped into the fray, now it's the state government's turn to step up," he says, adding that strong municipalities mean a strong state and a strong democracy.
Lies, the state's governor, admits the pressure on municipalities is mounting. However, a silver lining is being painted as the federal government has agreed to shoulder the full loss of revenue for the municipalities amounting to 13.5 billion euros.
Lies also stated that, when considering the expected losses of revenue for the states at 16.6 billion euros, the federal government will be dishing out 4 billion euros for a program that promotes education and daycare centers, and another 4 billion euros for the transformation fund for hospitals.
"This is a big-time relief for the states, but a significant part of that relief is headed straight to the municipalities," says Lies. The mission now is to invest that money so wisely that it becomes crystal clear to society that this state means business!
