Heidenau Tight Runoff: CDU's Marion Franz versus Unnamed Opponent

- CDU candidate secures 45% votes in Heidenau, triggering necessary by-election

In the Heidenau mayoral race, CDU's candidate, Marion Franz, took the lead, boasting an impressive 44.5% of votes. Unfortunately for her, the absolute majority couldn't be secured, necessitating a runoff on April 13. As of now, the identities of her rival in the runoff election remain undisclosed.

Conny Oertel from the Heidenau Citizens' Initiative and Max Schreiber from the Freie Sachen, a far-right micro-party, locked horns in a close race for the second position. Oertel garnered 24.1%, while Schreiber managed to snag 16.4% of the votes. Christoph Mitschke from the Citizens' Initiative Oberelbe for More Democracy trailed closely behind, securing 15%. Voter turnout hovered around the 50% mark in this election.

The original date for the mayoral election in the 16,500-resident city within the Saxon Switzerland-Osterzgebirge district was set for this year but was advanced by a year due to the retirement of the incumbent, long-time mayor, Jürgen Opitz (CDU), who first assumed office in 2012.
