CDU Candidate in Duisburg Under Investigation for Suspected Vote-Buying
A CDU candidate in Duisburg-Marxloh is under investigation for suspected vote-buying in the municipal elections held in September 2025. Petra Vogt, district chairwoman, has called for swift clarification from authorities after a complaint was filed regarding postal voting irregularities in the election update. The candidate, who ran for the district council of Hamborn and held fourth place on the CDU list, is accused of buying Roma votes for 25 euros each in the election. The investigation began after election helpers intervened when an intermediary tried to influence voters in the election. The intermediary, who had been cultivating contacts within the Roma community for months, allegedly offered the bribes on behalf of the candidate in the election. Duisburg's election supervisor has reported another irregularity in the election. Around 200 postal voting documents were requested for an address with mismatched birthdates, raising concerns about potential voter fraud in the election. A Facebook post by the intermediary is now being considered a clue in the ongoing investigation in the election update. While these allegations are serious, the outcome of the election is not expected to be affected. The accused CDU candidate has dismissed the allegations as a 'smear campaign'. Authorities are working swiftly to clarify the situation in the election update, with Petra Vogt expecting a prompt resolution.
