CDU alleges Weidel's insufficient national loyalty and foresight
In an interview on 'Welt' on Monday, Thuringia's Minister President, Mario Voigt, criticized Alice Weidel, the co-chair of the Alternative for Germany (AfD), for not being able to name three positive aspects of Germany during an earlier interview on ARD. Voigt's comments were made in response to Weidel's interview, where she failed to acknowledge any good things about the country. This criticism reflects Voigt's dissatisfaction with Weidel's performance or rhetoric in that setting.
Voigt, who is a member of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), highlighted Germany's achievements, stating that the country has the most patent applications in Europe and is a land of innovations. He also emphasized Thuringia's high density of cultural and UNESCO World Heritage sites in Europe.
Moreover, Voigt criticized the protest action that disrupted Weidel's interview, considering it more of an image boost for Weidel and a favor to her. He expressed his dismay, stating that it was a distraction and not challenging the AfD on its content.
Voigt's overall criticism of the AfD was that it stands for decline in Germany. He stated that it is cowardly not to acknowledge these achievements and that it's more important to challenge the AfD on substance and show that they have no plan for the country.
Directly addressing Weidel, Voigt emphasized the importance of making substantive challenges to the AfD rather than focusing on distractions like protest actions. The comments were made during a subsequent interview with the TV channel 'Welt' on Monday.
It is important to note that the context of Voigt's comments remains within the political discourse between the CDU and the AfD. Thuringia, according to Voigt, has one of the highest volunteer densities in the country.
This is not the first time Voigt has criticized the AfD. In the past, he has been vocal about his opposition to their political ideology and has called for a strong response to their rise in German politics.
