CDU alleges that the mayor has neglected to secure funding for Rheydter Straße and Ringerhalle; question arises whether the financing will be forfeited.

In the city of Neuss, Germany, two significant infrastructure projects have faced delays and controversy. The planned redesign for Rheydter Street, initially proposed in 2018 with an estimated cost of around 3.3 million euros, and the renovation of the KSK Concordia Neuss wrestling hall have both been affected.

According to Dr. Jörg Geerlings, CDU state MP, the city withdrew the funding application for Rheydter Street in January 2021, forfeiting 1.6 million euros in funding. Geerlings has also criticised the city for not utilising state funding opportunities, citing unspent funds from the "Catch-up after Corona" and "Integration Action Program" initiatives returning to the state. The reasons for the withdrawal are not publicly known, but they could be due to changes in budget or priority, revisions to the project scope, changes in funding guidelines, public or political opposition, or technical issues.

Meanwhile, the city recently submitted an insufficient application for the renovation of the wrestling training hall, which was not approved, according to Geerlings. The state will cover the majority of the 2.2 million euro construction costs, with the city and the Neusser Baths and Ice Sports Hall GmbH (NBE) each contributing 350,000 euros. The modernization and renovation of the wrestling training hall at Nordpark are set to begin in August 2024 and be completed by spring 2025.

The condition of Rheydter Street has been a source of complaint due to illegal parking, and the CDU party has expressed concerns about the poorly arranged parking spots, insufficient parking options, and the lack of a bike lane on Rheydter Street. Reiner Breuer, the city's mayor, temporarily removed Rheydter Street from the plan during planning discussions with the city and regional government. However, he has mentioned that the city currently has too many construction sites, causing a delay in the Rheydter Street project.

To determine the current status of the Rheydter Street upgrade, one can check recent council agendas and minutes, contact the local council or the department responsible for roads and infrastructure, or search local news sources for updates on the project's progress or changes.

Despite the delays, all parties agree that Rheydter Street is in need of a revamp. The withdrawal of the funding application has delayed an important infrastructure project, but the city, residents, and regional government are still working towards finding a solution to bring the much-needed improvements to Rheydter Street.

  1. The policy-and-legislation surrounding sports infrastructure in Neuss, Germany, has been a subject of scrutiny, with the withdrawal of funding for the Rheydter Street redesign, a sports-related project, causing a delay and stir.
  2. In the realm of general-news, the KSK Concordia Neuss wrestling hall renovation application was found insufficient, casting a shadow on the city's ability to secure funding for sports facilities, and potentially influencing the political landscape of Neuss.
