- Giddy optimism at the zoo: Panda twins are flourishing just fine
The newborn panda duo at Berlin Zoo is positively flourishing. Thanks to their mama's nutrition-packed milk diet, they've managed to surpass their birth weight and even add some bonus grams, as a representative shared. "The heavier one tips the scales at 180 grams, while the lighter sibling weighs 145 grams," they divulged.
Caring Mama Bear Meng Meng
Mama Meng Meng is providing tender affection to her precious offspring: "Every hour, these two bundles of joy alternate between nursing and cuddling with their loving mama bear," the rep explained. A collective team of German and Chinese panda experts are also lending their expertise to the family.
Elevated mortality risk during the early weeks
The strong weight gain is providing a glimmer of hope, as the early weeks are a critical time. "The first month, particularly the first two weeks, carries an elevated mortality rate for cubs, around 25% more than other stages," biologist and panda specialist Florian Sicks clarified.
Newborn pandas are born with a weakened immune system and are incredibly vulnerable in the first few days. At birth, they weighed 169 and 136 grams. Like other mammals, panda babies often lose some weight right after birth.
Born around 14 cm long
Last Thursday, Meng Meng gave birth to the mini pandas, measuring around 14 cm. This is the second time pandas have been born in Germany. Just like their parents, these cute critters hail from China, lent out as part of 'panda diplomacy'.
Meng Meng's care extends beyond collaboration with experts; she also uses unique ways to help her cubs. "She frequently licks her cubs' fur to aid their digestive systems, a behavior not commonly seen in other pandas," the panda expert pointed out.
To ensure the survival of the twin pandas, it's essential to address and mitigate potential risks during their first days. "Close monitoring of their health, especially regarding other illnesses or complications, becomes particularly vital during this vulnerable phase," Sicks emphasized.

- Ensuring Survival: It's a common challenge to ensure newborn giants pandas survive the first few weeks, given their reliance on their mothers and slow development. However, by carefully managing their diet, hygiene, healthcare, social interaction, and monitoring behavior, zoos, like Berlin Zoo, enhance the chances of their survival.
