Family and Friends Say Emotional Farewell - Catherine O'Hara, Schitt's Creek icon, dies at 71 after legendary career

Beloved actress Catherine O'Hara has died at the age of 71. Her passing on January 31 prompted an outpouring of tributes from fans and colleagues alike. Known for her sharp wit and unforgettable performances, she leaves behind a legacy spanning over five decades in film and television.

O'Hara rose to fame with iconic roles in Beetlejuice and the Home Alone films, where she played the frantic yet warm-hearted mother, Kate McCallister. More recently, she earned critical acclaim for her role in Schitt's Creek, winning an Emmy, a Golden Globe, and two Screen Actors Guild Awards. Her final on-screen appearance came in The Studio, an Apple TV+ series released last year.

A Catholic Mass in her honour took place on Valentine's Day at St. Martin of Tours Church in Los Angeles. The same church had hosted the funeral of her close friend and colleague John Candy in 1994, making the location a poignant choice. Actress Kelly Lynch shared a photo of the Mass program on Instagram, joining many in paying tribute.

The cause of death was a pulmonary embolism, complicated by an underlying battle with cancer. Tributes flooded in from co-stars, including Macaulay Culkin, Chris Columbus, and the cast of Schitt's Creek, all celebrating her talent and warmth.

O'Hara is survived by her husband and children. With a career spanning over 120 productions, her influence on comedy and drama will endure. The Mass and tributes reflected the deep impact she had on those who knew her and the audiences who loved her work.
