Notre Dame Selects CJ Carr as Starting Quarterback for 2025 Season
The University of Notre Dame has announced that sophomore CJ Carr will be their starting quarterback for the upcoming 2025 season. Coach Marcus Freeman made the decision ahead of the season opener against No. 10 Miami[1][4].
CJ Carr, a freshman at Notre Dame, comes from a family deeply rooted in Michigan football history. His grandfather, Lloyd Carr, is a legendary University of Michigan head coach who led the Wolverines to a perfect season and the 1997 national championship. His father, Jason Carr, also played quarterback at Michigan[1][3][5].
Carr attended Saline High School in Saline, Michigan, and was highly regarded in his recruiting class. He participated in the 2024 All-American Bowl, a showcase for top high school football talent[3][4]. Despite his family ties to Michigan, Carr committed to Notre Dame, making him a key recruit and the "crown jewel" of Notre Dame’s 2024 recruiting class[2].
Carr emphasizes his strong understanding of the game, particularly his ability to read defenses and his good relationships with teammates, crediting the offensive line and receivers for their roles in making plays[1]. He acknowledges that he and Riley Leonard, another competitor for the starting quarterback position, are not the same player[6].
