According to estimates from the director of Nigeria's emergency management agency, Nema, the death toll stands at approximately 115, although many individuals remain unaccounted for. The flooding in Mokwa follows a pattern of fatalities caused by flooding in Nigeria, a common occurrence in West Africa. Last year, over 600 lives were lost in floods across several Nigerian states, displacing more than 1.3 million people. These floods were the result of heavy rainfall.
The floods in Mokwa were triggered by heavy rainfall and a dam collapse from May 28 to May 29, 2025. As of now, the situation remains critical, with more rainfall forecasted for central Nigeria in the coming days. Over 3,000 homes have been affected, with 265 destroyed.
