Catastrophic Football Weather Leads to Historically Low Over/Under Total
In the upcoming NFL games this weekend, the weather conditions are expected to play a significant role in determining the total points scored, according to sportsbook director Robert Kowalski of ZenSports and the Book at Baldini's in Sparks, Nevada.
Kowalski opened with a 33.5-point total for the game between the Buffalo Bills and Chicago Bears, scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday at Soldier Field. However, he has since lowered the over/under to 40.5 points, a consensus among bookmakers, due to concerns about the weather conditions. Kowalski suggests that Chicago's defense may struggle in poor weather, contributing to a higher total for the Bills-Bears game.
On the other hand, the over/under for the Cleveland Browns vs. New Orleans Saints game on Saturday is set at a significantly lower 30.5 points. Kowalski lowered this total late Tuesday morning, citing a lack of interest from bettors. The low total could be attributed to the questionable fitness of Browns' running back Nick Chubb, who is nursing an injury, which could explain the 10-point difference in the totals between the two games.
Chief meteorologist for RotoGrinders, Kevin Roth, predicts highs in the low teens for the Browns-Saints game in Cleveland this Saturday. He also observes a ton of games with low temperatures and high winds, with Cleveland being the windiest and Chicago not far behind. Roth describes the weather as "literally the worst football weather imaginable."
Roth believes that both the Bills and the Bears have had poor weather conditions throughout the season. However, he notes that both teams have experience playing in the snow and slop, which may contribute to the higher total for the Bills-Bears game. Kowalski questions how field goals can be kicked in such adverse weather conditions, but Roth believes that Buffalo seems to be impervious to any conditions at the moment.
Before lunch, Kowalski's total for the Bills-Bears game was down to 31.5 points. Interestingly, this is the lowest NFL total since 2008, according to BetMGM. In the past 20 years, the lowest NFL total has been 30 points, which happened a few times in 2004 and 2005. However, the over/under for the Bills-Bears game is historically high compared to the Browns-Saints game, with potential snow flurries, sustained winds of 20 to 30 mph, and gusts over 40 mph expected in both games.
Despite the unfavorable weather conditions, Kowalski states that no one is betting on the Browns-Saints game over or under the total. It remains to be seen how these weather conditions will impact the games and the scoring totals.
