Catastrophic flooding in southern Brazil has led to the loss of 56 lives
In the state of Rio Grande do Sul, a severe flood crisis is unfolding, with over 377,000 people affected by heavy rain, storms, and flooding, according to the latest reports. This crisis, as of the start of the week, is the worst in over 80 years, according to the country's geological service.
The crisis was triggered by a burst sluice gate at Lake Patos in Porto Alegre, which led to several neighborhoods being at risk of flooding. The current water level in Lake Guaiba in Porto Alegre is higher than the record flood level in 1941, reaching nearly 30 centimeters above the previous high of 476 cm.
The severe weather conditions have led to a significant number of people being without water, with at least 860,000 people currently affected. Evacuation has begun in Porto Alegre due to the risk of flooding from the burst sluice gate at Lake Patos, and tens of thousands of residents are now in shelters.
The Civil Defense Service of the state of Rio Grande do Sul reports that severe weather is affecting 281 municipalities. Four dams in the state are in critical condition with a high risk of collapse. The crisis was preceded by heavy rainfall that began at the start of the week, and it has surpassed the impact of the September 2023 cyclone in terms of affected population and potential fatalities.
Sadly, the number of fatalities from natural disasters in 2024 has already surpassed the September 2023 figure in the state. In September 2023, the state was severely affected by a cyclone, with 54 deaths reported.
As of now, no information is available about organizations or institutions supporting the evacuation of residents in Rio Grande do Sul due to floods and storms. The flooding in southern Brazil continues to pose a significant threat, and it is crucial for those affected to receive the necessary aid and support.
