Catastrophic flash floods and landslides in Điện Biên have resulted in the loss of twelve lives and several people still unaccounted for.
In the past few days, Điện Biên Province in Vietnam has been hit by heavy rains, causing flash floods, landslides, and soil erosion. The floods have resulted in at least eight confirmed deaths and three people missing as of August 2, 2025.
The floodwaters have submerged dozens of homes, with 14 houses being completely swept away in Hang Pu Xi village alone. The affected villages include Hang Pu Xi, Na Son, Muong Luan, Tia Dinh, Xa Dung, and Ta Dinh communes. Two children lost their lives when a landslide buried a home in Tia Dinh, and many residents have been evacuated to safer locations.
The infrastructure damage is extensive, with national and provincial roads severely damaged, some highways becoming impassable, and traffic disrupted across the province. Local authorities and rescue teams are actively working to clear the landslides, search for the missing, evacuate residents, and provide medical care to the injured.
Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha has visited the affected areas, calling for immediate emergency response and support for the displaced communities.
The heavy rains that occurred from July 31 to August 1 have continued, with moderate to heavy rains and some areas receiving over 70mm. Scattered showers are expected to persist, suggesting ongoing risk for further floods or landslides.
The situation remains critical as many villages remain isolated, and recovery and relief operations are underway. The authorities have yet to access Suối Lư village in Na Son Commune due to road blockages caused by flooding and landslides. Two people were injured in the province due to the floods, and rocks and soil covered the entire road surface on National Highway 12, causing traffic congestion. Floods have inundated six households in Suối Lư village in Na Son Commune.
Machinery and workers have been assigned to fix the landslides, and the authorities are working tirelessly to restore access to the affected villages. The people of Điện Biên Province are hopeful that the situation will improve soon, and they can return to their normal lives.
