Catastrophic flash flood leaves four deceased and one hundred missing in Indian Himalayan settlement

In the picturesque town of Dharali, Uttarakhand state, India, a devastating flash flood occurred on August 5, 2025. The disaster has left at least four people dead and over 50 people missing, according to the latest updates.

Rescue operations have been underway since the incident, with the Indian Army's Ibex brigade, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) working tirelessly to save lives. As of now, around 190 people have been rescued.

The floodwaters and mudslides have caused significant damage to Dharali village and the surrounding areas, disrupting infrastructure and connectivity to Gangotri Dham. A second cloudburst near Dharali further complicated rescue efforts and damage assessment.

Authorities, led by Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, are coordinating relief and evacuation efforts. So far, 70 people have been evacuated and moved to safe shelters.

The Minister of State for Defence, Sanjay Seth, described the situation as serious and expressed prayers for the safety of the missing people. He stated that around 100 people are currently missing.

Videos on Indian media show a terrifying surge of muddy water sweeping away multi-storey apartment blocks in Dharali. The flood was accompanied by a torrent of mud and demolished buildings, uprooting entire structures. Several people could be seen running before being engulfed by the dark waves of debris.

The flood tore down a narrow mountain valley, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake. The situation remains critical, with ongoing search and rescue attempts for the missing persons and heightened vigilance due to forecasts of continued heavy rainfall in the region. Satellite data analyses are being conducted to assess the full extent of the disaster.

Our thoughts are with those affected by this tragic event, and we hope for a swift resolution to the ongoing rescue efforts.
