Remember the thrilling moments? On May 24, 2025, coach Uwe Koschinat, surrounded by jubilant fans of Rot-Weiss Essen in the Duisburg football arena, shouted out his joy, echoing the incredible journey he and RWE had been through. It was the culmination of four months of unexpected triumphs, against all odds at the beginning of the year.

This golden era started after a tough match against Alemannia Aachen on January 19, 2024. That traumatic night seemed like the end of the road, with anger and despair enveloping the fans. But little did they know, a turnaround was about to take place.

The Ruin and the Phoenix

The promising season built on "shrewd transfers" (more on that later) and an energizing training camp in Turkey – where the mood transformed, and the second-division top club Dynamo Dresden was outplayed (1:1) – was suddenly brought to a halt. A devastating loss to Aachen left RWE relegated to 19th place. The dreams of a return to the 2nd Bundesliga, the fruits of years of hard work, seemed shattered beyond repair.

Uwe Koschinat, however, had a different perspective. Known for his ability to rise above adversity, he chose to focus on what worked rather than dwelling on the negatives. And there was plenty to be grateful for. He found that success is often overlooked, so he decided to prioritize it in his own life.

And so, those beautiful days in his home garden began, where he found peace in positive self-reflection. This mindset carried him through the tough times that lay ahead.

Out of the Darkness and into the Light

But there was a light at the end of the tunnel. Seven days after the loss to Aachen, Hannover 96 II stepped onto the field. This was a do-or-die game for RWE, and they needed a hero. Enter Klaus Gjasula. Though he had only recently joined the team, with great expectations, Gjasula – a mental titan, a two-time puncher – was just what they needed. Born in Tirana, Albania, and with a decorated career spanning several teams, Gjasula embodied the spirit of RWE. He was an emotional fighter, ready to take on any challenge.

Gjasula: The Turning Point

With Gjasula at the helm, RWE began to transform. They became a sturdy defensive force, with players like Tobias Kraulich, Michael Schultz, and José-Enrique Rios-Alonso guarding the fort. Behind them stood Jakob Golz, offspring of HSV legend Richard Golz, a top-caliber goalkeeper. And Gjasula, with his unyielding presence and ferocious determination, inspired everyone around him. His selfless leadership elevated the entire team, as they went on to win against Hannover (5:1).

The Koschinat philosophy was not to be dismissed lightly. The coach instilled a defensive mentality, reorganizing the system and placing emphasis on stability and determination. This strategic shift allowed RWE to dominate the league, catapulting them up the table and eventually reaching 8th place in the final standings.

The Road Ahead

With a solid foundation set, RWE looks to the future with optimism and anticipation. Marek Janssen, a powerful striker who fits Koschinat's vision, has been signed for the summer. And with the addition of a strong challenger, the team hopes to maintain their on-field dominance.

But the greatest challenge will be replacing Julian Eitschberger, who must return to Hertha BSC. They have found a potential replacement in Luca Bazzoli, a flexible and experienced player from 2nd Liga Preußen Münster. And as the 2025/26 season approaches, RWE is more determined than ever to continue their miraculous journey.
