Catastrophic collision: Massive tree crashes onto vehicles in Kalkaji during heavy rain, claiming one life and injuring a daughter.
In a shocking incident that took place on Kalkaji Road, Delhi, on August 14, 2025, an old neem tree uprooted during heavy rainfall and fell near Paras Chowk, crushing a motorcycle carrying a father and his daughter.
The incident, captured on CCTV, occurred around 9:50 am. The victims, identified as 50-year-old Sudhir Kumar and his 22-year-old daughter Priya, were passing by near an HDFC Bank in Kalkaji when the tree fell on them.
The large and old tree, weakened by continuous heavy rain, uprooted suddenly, causing a sudden tragedy. Sudhir Kumar tragically lost his life at Safdarjung Trauma Centre, while Priya sustained serious injuries, including a fractured hip, and is currently recovering.
Rescue teams, including the police, the Station House Officer, and the ACP Kalkaji, arrived quickly at the scene. They used heavy machinery, such as a JCB machine and hydraulic crane, to remove the tree and extricate the victims.
Several nearby vehicles, including a parked Hyundai i10 car, were damaged in the incident. One person was rescued from a damaged car, but fortunately, the car occupants escaped unharmed. Traffic management was carried out to clear the congestion caused by the rescue and tree removal operation.
The CCTV footage shows a huge tree uprooting and falling on the commuters. Commuters gathered around the incident site with umbrellas, attempting to rescue the duo. The footage also shows a crowd of concerned onlookers gathering around the fallen tree.
Authorities have alerted municipal bodies to assess and prune other trees in the area to prevent future tragedies. The family is grieving the unexpected loss, as Sudhir Kumar was the sole breadwinner and is survived by his wife and three children.
Priya, the daughter, is in stable condition and receiving treatment at Safdarjung Trauma Centre. Our thoughts are with the family during this difficult time.
