August 15, 2025
A devastating cloudburst in Kishtwar, Jammu and Kashmir, has claimed at least 65 lives and left over 100 people injured, with around 32 still missing, as rescue operations intensify in the region.
The disaster struck on August 14, around 12.30 pm, in the Chositi village near the Machail Mata Shrine, triggering massive flash floods that swept away homes, a community kitchen with approximately 200 people, a security outpost, and vehicles along the pilgrimage route.
Rescue efforts are being led by the Indian Army, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), police, Border Roads Organisation (BRO), civil administration, and local volunteers, who are navigating challenging high-altitude terrain to reach trapped survivors and retrieve bodies. Helicopters and teams are deployed to access the remote area and provide aid.
Officials have identified and handed over 46 bodies to families, but the number of missing persons remains uncertain. Some reports suggest that the actual number of missing could be higher due to the scale of the disaster and the remote location.
The pilgrimage, which attracts about 300,000 devotees annually, has been temporarily suspended as authorities focus on relief and risk assessment. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other senior leaders have expressed grief and pledged full assistance, while local administration and security agencies are coordinating the large-scale humanitarian response to prevent further loss of life.
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has briefed Prime Minister Modi about the situation and expressed gratitude for his support and assistance. Omar Abdullah also posted on social media about the discussion with the Prime Minister.
The tragedy has highlighted systemic lapses in risk assessment and disaster preparedness for the Machail Mata Yatra pilgrimage, emphasizing the urgent need for a robust safety framework to avert future incidents. The cloudburst also caused flash floods that washed away tents and stalls in the area, and the Chinab river and other streams have risen sharply due to the cloudburst and heavy rains.
