In Delhi's Hari Nagar area, a devastating incident occurred this morning at 9.16 am, as a portion of an old wall collapsed due to the heavy overnight rain on August 9, 2025. The collapse claimed the lives of eight individuals, including two young children, leaving a heart-wrenching impact on the community.

The victims were mostly scrap dealers living in makeshift jhuggis adjacent to an old temple in Jaitpur's Hari Nagar. The deceased have been identified as Shabibul (30), Rabibul (30), Muttu Ali (45), Rubina (25), Dolly (25), Hashibul, and children Rukhsana (6) and Hasina (7).

Authorities swiftly responded to the tragedy, evacuating the vulnerable jhuggi settlement near the temple to prevent further incidents. The Additional DCP stated that the collapse was due to the heavy rain weakening the old wall.

However, the exact cause of the wall collapse remains undetermined. The incident occurred amidst intense rainfall in Delhi, for which the India Meteorological Department (IMD) had issued a red alert, causing widespread waterlogging and traffic disruption in the city.

Areas such as Palam, Lodhi Road, Pusa, and Pragati Maidan recorded rainfall amounts of 31.8 mm, 80 mm, 69 mm, and 100 mm respectively in the same period. The weather station at Safdarjung recorded a total of 78.7 mm of rainfall in the 24 hours till 8.30 am on Saturday.

Rescue teams rushed the injured to Safdarjung Hospital and AIIMS, but sadly, all succumbed to their injuries during treatment. The Delhi Fire Service also responded to the incident, dispatching three fire trucks to the scene.

Community volunteers have arranged temporary shelter and basic supplies for the affected families, whose members expressed profound grief and loss following the collapse. As the city grapples with the aftermath of this tragedy, the community stands together in support and solidarity.
