Catarina Martins: 'The central block lacks clarity and fails to benefit us'
Marked Fresh: Left Bloc Kicks Off Campaign, Slams Central Bloc and Criticizes Government Policies
In Almada, Setúbal, the Left Bloc (BE) launched its 2022 campaign, vowing to be a solution-driven force rather than being a part of the confusing central bloc. Catarina Martins, BE's leader and a former actress, delivered a passionate speech to a crowd of around 200 people, including the party's three founders running for re-election.
"The BE steps up to offer solutions amidst the country's housing crisis, and we won't abandon anyone during this campaign or post-election," Martins declared. Taking aim at the PS and PSD, she highlighted their inaction and empty promises regarding the housing crisis.
"The PSD pretends to finally act on Antonio Costa's proposals, but this time it'll actually happen. Pedro Nuno Santos parrots AD, intending to continue the same unsuccessful strategies," she claimed. Criticizing those who opposed BE's rent cap proposal, Martins made a sarcastic quip, "Suddenly, concerns arise for the poor landlord or speculator, tempting us to implement distasteful measures."
The BE member also accused the government of using immigration as a distraction from the ongoing 'Spinumviva' case and client lists revelation. "They resort to polarizing tactics, scapegoating immigrants to deflect attention from internal issues," she stated.
Before the "European Left with the Bloc" session, Joana Mortágua, BE's deputy leader, addressed the audience. Defending BE's feminist legacy, she stated, "No feminist achievement in the country is without BE's imprint." Targeting Luís Montenegro, she added, "Those who downplay domestic violence numbers to suit their narrative are unfit to lead the government."
On May 18th, Joana Mortágua maintained, "Voting for the Left Bloc means voting for women's freedom."
