Clashes in Ukraine and Russia Result in Deaths and Wounds - Casualties sustained in assaults across Ukraine and Russia

In the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, cities along the Russian-Ukrainian border and beyond have been subjected to intense drone and bomb attacks, resulting in significant casualties, damage, and interceptions on both sides.

In Dobropillia, a city in the Donetsk Oblast, a 500-kilogram aerial bomb dropped by Russian forces struck a shopping center in the city center, killing at least two people and injuring 28 others. The attack caused damage to 54 retail outlets, 304 apartments, and eight vehicles, and started a fire. The attack was widely condemned as indiscriminate terror targeting civilians.

Elsewhere in Ukraine, Dnipro experienced a massive night attack using Iranian-designed Shahed explosive drones, resulting in one civilian death and five injuries, with three critically wounded. The assault caused multiple fires and damaged residential and industrial infrastructure. Ukrainian air defenses intercepted 22 drones, but some penetrated defenses, causing damage in Dnipro and surrounding communities such as Solone and Slobozhanske.

Meanwhile, Moscow reported the interception of more than 100 drones overnight in 12 Russian regions, including annexed Crimea. These successful interceptions led to temporary flight restrictions in affected areas. In response, Ukraine has been conducting increasing long-range drone strikes on Moscow as part of retaliatory operations targeting the Russian capital and border areas.

Both Russia and Ukraine continue to exchange drone and missile attacks daily, resulting in casualties and damage on both sides, with Moscow intensifying strikes despite international pressure for a ceasefire and peace negotiations.

In the aftermath of the Dobropillia attack, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described the incident as "horrible, stupid Russian terror" and "an attempt to kill as many people as possible." The front line between Russian and Ukrainian troops is approximately 15 kilometers from the city limits of Dobropillia.

In Ukraine, attention remains focused on Kyiv, where a vote is expected on the new Prime Minister Julia Swyrydenko and her cabinet. Volodymyr Zelenskyy tasked Denys Shmyhal with forming a new government on Monday, marking the end of Shmyhal's tenure as Prime Minister, a position he held since March 2020, before Russia's invasion in February 2022.

The damage and number of casualties caused by these drone strikes are insignificant compared to the destruction caused by Moscow in neighbouring Ukraine. The situation reflects continued escalation without ceasefire as of mid-July 2025.
