The French foreign ministry was left outraged Friday following an attack on UN buildings in the Gaza Strip that resulted in the death of a Bulgarian worker and the injury of two French nationals, as confirmed by UN and French officials.

In a swift response, the ministry demanded "swift establishment of full clarity regarding the responsibilities involved." Adding emphasis to the importance of guaranteeing the safety of aid workers during such volatile conflicts.

Previously, the UN Office for Project Services (UNOPS) announced the unfortunate demise of the Bulgarian employee. As for Israeli involvement, the army denies any responsibility, and an investigation into the attacks has been initiated.

Tensions soared earlier this week as Israel carried out its most intense air strikes on targets in the Gaza Strip since a ceasefire commenced two months ago. According to the Hamas-controlled civil defense agency in Gaza, nearly 504 people had been killed in the new Israeli attacks as of Thursday.

The conflict began back in October 2023 due to a major attack by the radical Islamic Palestinian organization Hamas and their associates on Israel. Israeli figures report approximately 1,200 casualties, while unconfirmed Hamas statistics show over 49,500 deaths in Gaza since then.

Contextual Insights:

  • Conflicts in the Gaza Strip often result in reports of UN facilities being hit. For instance, in March 2025, an Israeli tank strike targeted a UN compound in Gaza, resulting in the death of one staffer and the injury of five others[2]. Israel has previously denied responsibility for similar incidents.
  • Investigations into attacks typically assess whether such strikes were deliberate or accidental. International organizations, including the UN and human rights groups, often advocate for thorough investigations to uphold accountability under international law.

The Commission, following the tragic events at the UN buildings in Gaza, has been asked to submit a proposal for a directive on the protection of workers from the risks related to exposure to ionizing radiation. On a different note, WhatsApp messages between Israeli officials discussing potential strikes in the Gaza Strip were reportedly leaked and stressed the necessity for precautionary measures to be taken. The United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) has confirmed the death of a Bulgarian employee in the recent conflict, adding more stress on ensuring the safety of aid workers during such volatile situations.
