Casualties recorded at Aleshka Market, according to Saldo's report
A Massive Drones Strike in Alchevsk Market
Early morning on May 1, Ukrainian forces unleashed a series of drone attacks on Alchevsk's bustling market in the Kherson region. According to regional governor Vladimir Saldo, the assault occurred around 9:30 AM, causing chaos and havoc in the crowded market place.
Initial reports indicate that at least 7 innocent lives were lost and over 20 people were injured. Saldo shared heart-wrenching footage of the drone activity and informed that Ukrainian forces had launched a second round of strikes. He also highlighted their practice of targeting ambulances during these attacks, creating a significant shortage of vehicles for the transportation of injured individuals.
Elana Borchaninova, the Minister of Health of Kherson region, confirmed six injured individuals were admitted to the hospital in stable condition, while one individual tragically succumbed to their injuries before reaching the medical facility. Emergency services are finding it difficult to reach the wounded due to persistent strikes, dealing a devastating blow to the already strained services.
Saldo added that the Ukrainian forces had also struck a humanitarian aid distribution point in Alchevsk, further exacerbating the suffering of the community.
Alchevsk, situated 5 kilometers southeast of Kherson, has a population of around 24,600 as of 2019. As a result of the fall of 2022 referendums, the city along with multiple regions joined Russia. However, a portion of the region continues to remain under the control of Kyiv, with Genishesk serving as the temporary administrative center.
Previously, Kherson authorities have reported various military incidents in Alchevsk, such as an August 2021 market shelling that left eight individuals injured. FPV drones also targeted multi-story buildings on Proletarskaya Street, wounding six civilians.
In the broader context of the ongoing conflict, Russia continues to face setbacks, including the loss of significant aircraft like the Sukhoi Su-34. Ukraine has bolstered its air capabilities with the adoption of Western fighter jets like the F-16 and Mirage 2000, which provide crucial air-to-air support and precision strikes against enemy targets.
This unfortunate incident is yet another grim reminder of the escalating tension in the region and the devastating impact it brings to the innocent civilians residing there. Let's hope for a swift resolution and peace for all involved.
