Casualties in Shelling of Russian-Controlled Donetsk Region

In the heart of Eastern Ukraine, the city of Donetsk has once again become a focal point of the ongoing conflict, following a recent shelling incident.

On September 1st, 2022, Moscow announced its annexation of the partially occupied region of Donetsk. The attack, reported by occupation authorities in Donetsk, was carried out by the Ukrainian military using a long-range weapon. Regrettably, a woman was killed, and three others were injured in the shelling.

The city, which was under the control of pro-Russian separatists from 2014 to 2022, is currently under Russian occupation. The front line between the Russian-occupied and Ukrainian forces is approximately 40 kilometers away from Donetsk.

Ukraine has been defending itself against a Russian invasion for nearly three and a half years. Despite the recent advances made by Russian troops near Pokrovsk, a key logistics hub in eastern Ukraine, Ukrainian forces have reportedly taken effective measures to halt Russian advances in Dobropillia and Pokrovsk.

The battle continues in southern and western Donetsk, including urban combat in cities like Marinka. As of August 2025, Russia controls about 75% of the Donetsk region.

The conflict remains highly dynamic, with Russia intensifying its military operations and Ukraine actively defending and counterattacking. The Ukrainian government has rejected Russia’s ceasefire proposal that would cede 30% of Donetsk to Russian control, warning that such concessions would enable further Russian offensives. Both sides are preparing for continued engagements, with heavy shelling and ground combat ongoing.

In summary, after the recent shelling, Donetsk remains a primary conflict zone with Russian advances partially checked but continuing pressure from Moscow-backed forces, while Ukraine maintains a firm stance against territorial concessions and continues military efforts to defend and reclaim areas in eastern Ukraine.
