Casualties and Injuries in Attacks Across Ukraine and Russia

In the ongoing Russo-Ukrainian conflict, recent developments have seen a surge in civilian casualties, a new government appointment in Ukraine, and persistent drone attacks on Russian territory.

The intensified bombing campaign by Russian forces has resulted in record civilian casualties in Ukraine. According to the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission, in June 2025 alone, there were 232 civilian deaths and 1,343 injuries reported, marking the highest monthly toll in over three years. This surge is linked to a massively increased volume of drone and missile attacks, targeting Ukrainian cities far from the frontline.

The overall death toll from the Russo-Ukrainian War remains substantial. By July 2025, documented Russian military deaths were over 118,000, including officers, mobilized troops, and convicts. Ukrainian military officer casualties exceed 5,800.

On July 15, 2025, Ukraine underwent a significant wartime government reshuffle. Yulia Svyrydenko was appointed as Ukraine’s new Prime Minister, replacing Denys Shmyhal, who assumed the role of Defense Minister. This is the largest government overhaul during the ongoing war.

Ukrainian forces have continued to conduct drone attacks on Russian territory as part of their defensive efforts. On July 17, a series of drone strikes hit several western Russian cities, including Voronezh, injuring 16 people, some seriously. The Russian Ministry of Defense reported downing 55 Ukrainian drones overnight, with most intercepted near the Belgorod and Voronezh regions.

Despite these attacks, the scale of damage and casualties in Russia remains relatively limited compared to what Ukraine is enduring from Russian bombing. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin reported that three drones heading towards the capital were intercepted. In the western Russian city of Voronezh, three minors were injured by debris from previously shot-down drones hitting a multi-story building.

International diplomatic efforts and military aid preparations are ongoing. The US and NATO are discussing supplying advanced air defense systems like Patriot to Ukraine. The conflict's expanding scope and intensity were highlighted by former US President Donald Trump, who reportedly asked Ukraine’s President Zelensky if Ukraine could strike deep into Russia, including Moscow and St. Petersburg, if given long-range weapons.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described the attack on Dobropillia as "horrible, stupid Russian terror" and an "attempt to kill as many people as possible." A 500-kilogram bomb was dropped on the city center, resulting in dozens of injuries and significant damage to stores and hundreds of apartments. The military governor of the Donetsk region reported that the target was a shopping center in the heart of Dobropillia.

The front line between Russian and Ukrainian troops is approximately 15 kilometers from the city limits of Dobropillia, a city that was home to nearly 30,000 people before the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. The reports of both warring parties cannot be independently verified.

  1. Amidst the escalating Russo-Ukrainian conflict, the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission reported a record number of civilian casualties and injuries in June 2025, with a total of 232 deaths and 1,343 injuries, a surge linked to increased drone and missile attacks.
  2. Car-accidents, crime-and-justice, and general-news take a backseat in the international spotlight as the Russo-Ukrainian War and political developments in Ukraine dominate headlines, such as the reshuffling of the government, with Yulia Svyrydenko appointed as Prime Minister on July 15, 2025.
  3. As the conflict continues, discussions about military aid, including advanced air defense systems like Patriot, are prominent in international diplomatic efforts, while the scale of damage and casualties in Russia remains relatively low compared to Ukraine, with Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin reporting three drones intercepted heading towards the capital.
