House of the Dragon, the critically acclaimed prequel to Game of Thrones, is expanding its ensemble for its third season. The show, which is currently filming in the United Kingdom, is set to premiere in 2026.
Seven new cast members have been confirmed for the upcoming season. Among them are Annie Shapero, who will portray Alysanne "Black Aly" Blackwood, a character known for her cunning and resourcefulness. Barry Sloane, Tom Cullen, and Joplin Sibtain are also joining the cast, but their roles have not been specified yet.
Joining the newcomers are three familiar faces from the world of television. James Norton, known for his roles in Grantchester and The Trial of Christine Keeler, will play Ormund Hightower. Tommy Flanagan, best known for his role in Sons of Anarchy, will take on the part of Lord Roderick Dustin. Dan Fogler, who starred in The Walking Dead: World Beyond, has been cast as Ser Torrhen Manderly.
Steve Toussaint, who previously appeared in Doctor Who, will portray Corlys Velaryon, a character known for his ambition and cunning. The exact roles of the remaining new cast members have not been disclosed.
The third season of House of the Dragon will focus on the human toll of war and the motivations of both Team Black and Team Green. The Dance of the Dragons, a civil war among the Targaryen family, will unfold in Season 3, with alliances shifting and betrayals emerging. Dragons will still be a significant element of war in this season.
In addition to the seven new cast members, 22 actors are confirmed to return for the third season. Matt Smith returns as Daemon Targaryen, while Emma D'Arcy reprises her role as Rhaenyra Targaryen. Olivia Cooke returns as Alicent Hightower, and Rhys Ifans returns as Otto Hightower. Fabien Frankel is set to return as Criston Cole, and Sonoya Mizuno will reprise her role as Mysaria.
The third season will consist of eight episodes, with the exact plot details yet to be disclosed. Production of the season is scheduled to wrap in fall 2025.
