The main event will take place on January 20, 2024, at the stunning St. Nikolai Cathedral in Greifswald. This is the very same church where the Romantic artist was baptized, making it the perfect location for a historic celebration. But if you missed your chance at the opening ceremony, don't worry – there's plenty more in store for the anniversary year!
Almost 90 events have been planned for the entire year, and over 200 people have already registered to attend! One of the most anticipated events is the inauguration of newly designed church windows by renowned artist Ólafur Elíasson. These windows will be based on a work by Caspar David Friedrich and will transform the cathedral into a colorful and illuminated masterpiece.
Greifswald isn't the only city jumping on the Casper David Friedrich bandwagon. The history and legacy of this famous German painter will be celebrated throughout museums and cultural sites in various municipalities. As part of this initiative, a former gaming hall has been rented to host contemporary exhibits related to the artist.
If you're eager to get your hands on the program booklets for the first quarter of the anniversary year, you won't have to wait long. Starting in December, you'll be able to pick up your copies in Greifswald and the surrounding area, as well as from nationwide partners.

The historic Seifensiederei and the former residential and commercial building of the Friedrich family will also be on display.
