Casinos operated by Grosvenor set to debut retail sportsbetting venues in September, following a significant legal transformation
Land-based casinos in the UK are set to undergo a significant transformation, following recent changes in the country's gambling laws. These changes, passed into law in July 2025, now allow retail sports betting terminals to be introduced in casinos, a shift from previous rules that prohibited such terminals in these venues.
One of the casinos eyeing this opportunity is Grosvenor Casinos. The company, which operates more than 50 locations across the UK, plans to introduce sports betting terminals starting September 2025. Mark Harper, Managing Director of Grosvenor Casinos, expects this move to attract more customers and help compete against Adult Gaming Centres.
The new law also allows casinos to increase the number of certain high-jackpot "B1" gaming machines dramatically—from 20 up to 80 per venue from 22 July 2025. However, this change has raised concerns from some groups about gambling harm, and the need for stronger local authority controls.
Casinos holding converted premises licences must comply with updated conditions under amended provisions of the Gambling Act 2005 and related regulations. This ensures licensing authorities can impose restrictions on machine numbers and monitor responsible gambling measures, including protections for children, vulnerable persons, and information accessibility.
These reforms reflect a significant easing of restrictions on gambling operations in land-based casinos in England and Wales, effective primarily from July 2025 onward, with rollouts expected in late summer or early autumn 2025.
Customers are now able to place bets using their phones within casinos, rendering the prohibition redundant. However, the new law now provides a legal framework for these activities within the casinos, offering a more streamlined and regulated experience for both operators and customers.
