Cartoons for Equality: Spotlighting Violence Against Women in Dhaka
A national cartoon exhibition and festival, 'Cartoons for Equality', is currently underway in Dhaka, Bangladesh. The event, supported by the Government of Canada and various organisations, highlights violence against women and girls in everyday spaces, including digital environments. It features over 200 cartoons and comics from professional and emerging artists, with a 'Cartoonists' Round Table' set for November 7.
The festival, held at the National Art Gallery-6 of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy, showcases powerful artwork addressing various forms of violence. Junaid Iqbal Ishmam's 'Internet Sharks' won third prize, illustrating online violence and bullying against women and girls. Shamse Ara Naher Mohona's 'Palm Up' took second prize, focusing on domestic violence. Rehnuma Proshoon's 'Orna Koi' won first prize, criticising workplace bullying.
Ramisa Nawar's 'Not about the Dress' depicts women and girls from diverse backgrounds as victims of violence, highlighting the widespread nature of the issue. The festival also includes exhibitions, mural art, interactive installations, animation, video games, workshops, and live performances, providing a comprehensive exploration of the topic.
The festival concludes on November 8, leaving a lasting impact on attendees and sparking conversations about equality and women's rights. The 'Cartoonists' Round Table' on November 7, featuring singer Warda Ashraf and cartoonist Rashad Imam Tanmoy, will delve into online harassment and digital mobs, further enriching the festival's dialogue.
