Höller's inspiration for the book dates back to 1992, when he created a game with friends during a dinner. The book has been edited by Hans Ulrich Obrist and Stefanie Hessler, and features illustrations by notable artists such as Inez & Vinoodh, Wolfgang Tillmans, and Marina Abramović.
