Carolina Marín, Spain's badminton legend, retires at 32 after historic career

Spanish badminton star Carolina Marín has announced her retirement at 32. The decision comes after a serious knee injury ended her hopes of competing again. She leaves the sport as the only non-Asian woman to ever win Olympic gold in singles badminton. Marín's career has been marked by record-breaking success. She claimed 11 major international titles, including gold at the Rio 2016 Olympics. Her achievements also include three World Championship wins in 2014, 2015, and 2018, alongside seven European Championship victories between 2014 and 2024.

The injury that forced her retirement occurred during the 2024 Paris Olympics semifinals. Though she had aimed to return for the European Championships in Huelva this April, ongoing physical struggles led to her final decision. Her dominance in the sport made her a standout figure. No other European woman has matched her consistency or trophy count in badminton's top competitions.

Marín's retirement closes a chapter in badminton history. Her 11 international titles and Olympic gold remain unmatched by any non-Asian player. The sport will now look to a new generation without one of its most decorated champions.
