Cargo Ship Collides with Bridge Near Osnabrück, Captain Injured

A cargo ship collided with a bridge near Osnabrück harbor on Tuesday morning, causing significant damage to the ship's wheelhouse but no harm to the bridge or its infrastructure. The incident occurred around 6:10 AM on September 30th.

The 43-year-old captain of the ship sustained a leg injury during the collision and was promptly taken to the hospital for treatment. The cause of the incident was attributed to a misjudgment by the captain. Despite the damage to the ship, no hazardous or harmful substances entered the water, posing no immediate threat to the environment.

Following the collision, the bridge was closed to traffic, and a structural engineer was called to assess the damage. Officers from the Minden Water Police Station took charge of the situation, securing the ship and investigating the incident. A ship accident report was filed to document the event.

The bridge and its underlying gas and water pipes remained undamaged, ensuring no disruption to essential services. The responsible authorities, likely the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH) or local maritime authorities in conjunction with police or the Transport Authority, will continue to investigate the cause and circumstances surrounding the accident.
