FC Augsburg's Troublesome Midfielder, Cardona, Finalizes Permanent Departure - Cardona bids farewell to Augsburg permanently

Say goodbye, Augsburg! Offensive player, Irvin Cardona, has bid his farewell to FC Augsburg to embark on a permanent move to AS Saint-Étienne. This change took place after the French club exercised the purchase option and signed the talented forward.

The 27-year-old’s last stint with Augsburg started in January 2023 when he transferred from Stade Brest. In the 2023/24 season, Cardona was initially loaned to AS Saint-Étienne and played a vital part in their promotion to Ligue 1 with his impressive performances. This was followed by a short loan spell at Espanyol Barcelona before returning to AS Saint-Étienne on a permanent basis.

In 15 appearances for Augsburg, Cardona netted five goals and provided three assists. However, he could not halt the immediate relegation of Saint-Étienne in the season’s latter half.

Reflections on Augsburg:Reflecting on his time with the Swabian Bundesliga club, Cardona expressed gratitude towards fans, teammates, and management. He wishes only the best for the future of Augsburg.

Augsburg's managing director, Michael Ströll, acknowledged the permanence of the transfer as a good solution for all parties involved. He expressed confidence in Cardona securing a crucial role at AS Saint-Étienne and wished him success on both a personal and sporting level.

Augsburg will prepare for the new season starting in July with their new coach, Sandro Wagner, who is expected to bring fresh energy to the FCA. The Swabians ended the season in 12th place, missing out on a European Cup starting spot due to a losing streak in the final phase of the season.

Transfer Details:The details of the transfer were finalized on June 2, 2025, with Cardona signing a contract to run through 2028. The transfer fee for this move reportedly stood at €2.5 million.

Future at AS Saint-Étienne:AS Saint-Étienne, a French club that has encountered difficulties in recent years, hopes to rebuild and strengthen its squad under the leadership of Cardona. Given Cardona’s attacking skills and experience, the club expects him to contribute significantly to their future performances.

The addition of Cardona to the team may influence the overall team dynamics, potentially leading to a more cohesive and effective playing style. Saint-Étienne offers Cardona the opportunity to develop his skills and gain more experience in a competitive environment. With his performances, he may secure increased recognition and future opportunities in the French football scene.

The ultimate goal for Saint-Étienne is to improve their league standing and achieve better results in domestic competitions, and Cardona’s role will play a crucial part in achieving these objectives.
