Car Thefts Surge in Germany's Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and Brandenburg Regions

Car thefts in Germany's Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and Brandenburg regions have seen significant activity in 2024, with valuable vehicles being targeted. In Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, 225 insured cars worth around 17,300 euros each were stolen, while Brandenburg reported 1,138 thefts, causing over 23 million euros in losses.

Brandenburg's car theft rate is notably higher, at 9 thefts per 10,000 insured cars, compared to Mecklenburg-Vorpommern's 3 thefts per 10,000 insured cars, which aligns with the national average. Toyota, Volkswagen, and Audi models are popular targets, with high-value SUVs and luxury cars being frequently stolen.

In Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, car thefts increased by 24% in 2024, resulting in an estimated economic damage of 3.9 million euros. Insurers and police advise car owners to ensure they receive confirmation of locking and to take preventive measures such as removing the ignition key, closing windows and doors, and using protective covers for keyless systems.

The data highlights the importance of car owners taking necessary precautions to protect their vehicles. Despite the increase in car thefts, the overall economic impact in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern remains relatively low compared to Brandenburg. Authorities continue to monitor the situation and provide guidance to car owners to mitigate risks.
