Bennet Miemban-Ganata's Plato Filipino has been the heart of Vancouver's bustling Filipino neighborhood since its inception. Every spring, this vibrant restaurant and community hub becomes an even more significant gathering place, as it hosts a series of festivals celebrating Filipino culture. From the much-anticipated Filipino Restaurant Month in April to the heartwarming Filipino Heritage Month in June, the air crackles with the hum of chatter, the rhythm of folk dances, and the aroma of traditional dishes like crispy lumpia, grilled pork belly, and beef stew.
But the festivities took a dark turn on a fateful Saturday night (April 26, 2025) during the annual Lapu Lapu Day festival, which honors Datu Lapu-Lapu, an indigenous chieftain who resisted Spanish explorers in the 16th century. As the sun set, a black Audi SUV plowed through a closed, food-truck-lined street, leaving casualties in its wake.
"It was just supposed to be a fun celebration, people being together," Miemban-Ganata shared through tears, recalling that tragic evening at Plato Filipino. "It felt like we have each other in this foreign land."
A Devastating Ramming Attack
The festival, a testament to the growing presence of the Filipino community in the Vancouver area, had blossomed with Filipino-owned shops and restaurants, like Plato Filipino, sprouting up, especially in South Vancouver. The night was expected to be a night of joy, laughter, and togetherness - but the festivities were abruptly cut short when the driver, Kai-Ji Adam Lo, slammed into the festival crowd.
Eleven innocent lives were snuffed out, including a five-year-old girl and her parents. Thirty-two people were injured, with seven in critical condition and three in serious condition according to Vancouver Police Department spokesperson Steve Addison.
An Unlikely Suspect
Initial investigations ruled out a terrorist attack, and Lo was taken into custody, facing multiple counts of second-degree murder. It was revealed that he had a history of mental illness that had led to law enforcement interactions, including one the day before the attack. Tragedy struck even closer to Lo when his brother fell victim to a homicide in 2024. Distraught by the loss, Lo made a plea for financial support online.
A Community United in Sorrow
Despite the tragedy, Vancouver Premier David Eby emphasized that the anniversary should not overshadow the city's deep affection for the Filipino community. "Today should not just be a day to remember the loss but also to honor the culture that brings joy and adaptation to our city," he stated.
