Car Driver Strikes Two Pedestrians at Crosswalk in Almaty
Happening Now: Pedestrian Mishap in Almaty's Turkestan District
In a sobering incident today, a Toyota driver reportedly struck two pedestrians at a crosswalk in Almaty's Turkestan district, as per our latest reports citing the city's police department.
The Almaty Police Department's press service shared the details of this mishap that occurred at 1:50 AM on Zhansugurova Street. The Toyota driver, heading north, collided with two pedestrians crossing the road at a designated pedestrian crossing.
Both victims were immediately hospitalized. The police department is currently conducting an investigation and appointing necessary examinations to uncover the factors that led to this unfortunate incident.
Regrettably, this isn't the first such incident in Almaty this year. back in April, another car accident involving a Mercedes occurred at a crosswalk, injuring an elderly woman and a child.
Tragically, a woman lost her life in Kokchetav in March when a car strayed onto the sidewalk while she was out walking with her granddaughter.
These incidents highlight the importance of improved road safety measures, a concern that seems to be echoed by the Kazakhstan government. Although specific details about local measures in Almaty are scarce, it's worth noting that the country is investing in better road infrastructure along the Western Europe–Western China corridor to bolster connectivity and safety standards.
The Almaty Railway Bypass Project is another initiative aimed at increasing freight rail transportation capacity, speed, and safety, potentially reducing road usage and indirectly improving overall transportation safety.
The Kazakhstan government is also encouraging caution during adverse weather conditions such as dust storms, indicating ongoing efforts to address safety concerns proactively.
