Ready to set sail! The latest addition to the German Navy, the corvette "Augsburg", was christened in the bustling city of Hamburg, marking another milestone in the fleet's expansion. This exciting news was shared by Lürssen, a leading shipyard group based in Bremen, who will oversee the final outfitting and testing of the vessel at the Blohm+Voss shipyard before it's handed over to the navy.
With a proud smile, Augsburg's mayor, Eva Weber (CSU), expressed her pride saying, "Christening the corvette 'Augsburg' is a powerful symbol of our city's connection with the German Navy."
The "Augsburg" is part of the renowned Braunschweig class 130, with the navy ordering five such ships between 2008 and 2013. In 2017, an additional order for five more corvettes followed, with Lürssen spearheading the construction consortium. Also involved in the project are other marine giants - ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems and German Naval Yards, both based in Kiel.
Only the "Lübeck" remains unchristened among the fleet.
Before the "Augsburg", vessels like the "Cologne", "Emden", and "Karlsruhe" were christened at the Blohm+Voss shipyard. Meanwhile, the Christening of the "Lübeck" is yet to take place. These ships, engineered and capable for coastal operations, boast superior capabilities in reconnaissance and combat in the North and Baltic Seas.
