Car accident on West Braddock Road results in road closure and power failures

In the early hours of this morning, a single-vehicle crash on West Braddock Road resulted in a power outage and road closure, attracting the attention of emergency services and utility crews.

The incident, which occurred at around 2:33 a.m., took place at the 900 block of West Braddock Road, near Fontaine and East Timber Branch roads. The crash involved a Ford that collided with a utility pole, causing two utility poles to fall and live wires to come down with transformers blown in the area.

As a result, more than 4,000 Dominion Energy customers lost electricity. However, power was restored to most customers just after 1 p.m., leaving only four cars in Alexandria without power as of 2:30 p.m. The remaining customers are expected to have their power restored between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m.

The 22-year-old male driver was bleeding from his hand when crews arrived at the scene. Engine 203, Medic 203, Alexandria police, and Dominion Energy responded to the incident. The driver told police there was a second occupant in the Ford but that he had fled the scene.

The Alexandria Police Department did not immediately respond to a request for more information. Motorists are advised to seek alternate routes while crews work to repair the damage and restore power.

The road closure is expected to last all day as crews work to clear the scene and repair the damaged infrastructure. Emergency crews were dispatched to the scene at 2:33 a.m., and the number of affected customers had dropped to 456 by 5 a.m. The number of affected customers remained unchanged at 456 as of 7:30 a.m., according to the utility's outage map.

As of the time of writing, the 22-year-old driver involved in the accident has not been publicly identified. The driver was out of the car when crews arrived at the scene, with his airbags having deployed.

We will continue to monitor this situation and provide updates as more information becomes available.
